- Areas de investigación. Investigaciones en astrofísica teórica y observacional:
Cosmología y estructura a gran escala del Universo.

Libro sobre Cosmología desde una visión escéptica, recopilando argumentos científicos, filosóficos y sociológicos [158]. Artículos de revisión (review) sobre las dificultades y cuestiones abiertas que posee el modelo estándar[44,100,129]; reseña sobre un libro acerca del tema[101]. ``Review'' sobre los tests de la expansión del Universo [114]. ``Review'' sobre los problemas de las hipótesis de la materia oscura y la energía oscura [135]. `Review'' sobre modelos cosmológicos alternativos [161].

Tests cosmológicos, comparando observaciones a diferentes desplazamientos al rojo (redshifts) con prediciones de diferentes modelos cosmológicos, con expansión o estáticos: medida de la variación del tamaño angular de las galaxias[86]; medida de la proporción entre tamaños angulares y a lo largo de la línea de visión (test de Alcock-Paczynski)[106,123,162]; uso del diagrama de Hubble con cuásares usando una relación no lineal entre las luminosidades en ultravioleta y en rayos X [120]; diagrama con supernovas [163]. Relació en galaxias espirales entre tamaño, absorción interna y emisión del polvo y sus posibles usos como test cosmológico [155].

Estudio de la evolución histórica de dos parámetros cosmológicos: la constante de Hubble [148,165] y la amplitud de las fluctuaciones de masa [148], mostrando que la reciente "tensión de Hubble" es probablemente debida a una infravaloración de las barras de error, como ha sido en el pasado.

Anisotropías en la Radiación cósmica de fondo en microondas (CMBR): contaminación Galáctica[18,52,68], efecto Sunyaev-Zel'dovich en la interacción con cúmulos of galaxias[128], análisis del origen de los picos en el espectros de potencias para cualquier cosmología[103,104], falta de correlaciones a escalas angulares grandes en las fluctuaciones que suponen un argumento en contra del paradigma inflacionario básico, y quizás incluso sugieran alternativas no inflacionarias para el origen y el crecimiento de las perturbaciones en el Universo temprano[130,156].

Estructura a gran escala del Universo, distribución de galaxias: aplicación de mecánica estadística[1,12]; cálculo analítico de la evolución de estas estructuras en el régimen no lineal[23,32]; análisis estadísticos de datos[7,8,45,73,80]; medida de la correlación entre las anisotropías de la radiación cósmica de fondo y las cuentas de galaxias [85], algo que debiera detectarse si existiese la energía oscura, con el resultado de ausencia de correlación, en contra de las proclamaciones de algunos cosmólogos. Contenido de polvo en los cúmulos de galaxias[111,124].

Estimación de las edades de galaxias de alto desplazamiento al rojo, para restringir los posibles escenarios de formación de galaxias elípticas muy masivas extremadamente rojas que se observan con desplazamientos al rojo entre 0,8 y 3,8 [83,95,127], y mostrando que usar los llamados "cronómetros cósmicos" no es un buen método[127,133] para análisis de evolución de la edad.

Exploración de la variación de la constante de estructura fina a escalas de tiempo cosmológicas[87,92,118], con el resultado de compatibilidad con un valor constante.

Desplazamientos al rojo espectrales anómalos en sistemas de galaxias/cuásares con distintos desplazamiento al rojo aparentemente ligados [34,35,46,48,53,54,58,71,81]: persisten algunas anomalías conocidas de antaño, pero los datos no permiten concluir la existencia de desplazamientos al rojo no cosmológicos. Escenarios teóricos del desplazamiento al rojo no-cosmológico de fotones masivos en la Extensión del Modelo Estándar [152].

Cuásares.

Artículo de revisión (review) sobre problemas para entender los cuásares[89].

Estudio de la evolución en la dependencia que tiene la masa de los agujeros negros de los cuásares con la luminosidad bolométrica[97], con el resultado de que no hay evolución.

Análisis de la distribución observada de chorros con movimientos superlumínicos, con la conclusión de que la potencia cinética de cada cuásar debería ser mucho mayor de lo que estimado anteriormente, del orden de la luminosidad bolométrica[99].

Observación de contrapartidas ópticas de fuentes ultraluminosas de rayos X (ULXs en inglés) cerca de algunas galaxias, para concluir que muchas (la mayoría) de ellas son cuásares de fondo [47,50,54,56,66,79].

Estructura de la Vía Láctea.

Desarrollo de algunas herramientas de análisis: cálculo de las funciones de correlación en la distribución de estrellas para derivar información sobre la posición de los cúmulos [11,17]; solución analítica para la corrección a las cuentas de estrellas sujetas a confusión en campos sobresaturados[9,11]; inversión de la ecuación de estadística estelar aplicada al bulbo de nuestra Galaxia[11,13,15,22,29,51,74], uso de las estrellas gigantes rojas del "Red Clump" como trazadoras de la estructura Galáctica[38,82].

Trabajos observacionales dedicados al estudio morfológico de las componentes de nuestra Galaxia: el bulbo [11,13,15,20,22,25,26,27,28,29,51,61,63,65,74,76,77,122,125,139,160], la "barra larga" [2,4,5,6,11,14,16,19,20,24,28,31,59,61,63,64,65,74,77,91,93,102,105]; el disco [20,27,38,39,49,60,69,72,75,109,115,131,146,147], brazos espirales[126]; la extinción por polvo [43]. Se distinguen la barra y el bulbo como dos estructuras diferentes, posiblemente con diferentes ángulos, algo que también se observa en otras galaxias[112]. Es de destacar la refutación[122,125,139,160] de un bulbo con forma de X proclamado por otros autores.

En pugna con otras hipótesis que proclamaron el descubrimiento de una galaxia enana satélite como responsable del exceso de estrellas en la región de Canis Major, se han dado argumentos [55,67] para creer que no hay tal galaxia enana sino que se trata de un efecto de proyección del alabeo+ensanchamiento del disco externo de la Vía Láctea. Además, el anillo de Monoceros, que se supuso que era una corriente estelar asociada a los residuos en el interacción de esta galaxia enana con la Vía Láctea, también parece ser parte de nuestra Galaxia, siendo su exceso de cuentas estelares debido al ensanchamiento del disco grueso[90,98,109].

Cinemática y dinámica galáctica.

Artículo de revisión (review) invitado sobre dinámica y cinemática del disco de la Vía Láctea [151]. Cinemática y dinámica en la Vía Láctea: a partir de los movimientos propios y radiales heliocéntricos de estrellas en el disco externo se han obtenido las velocidades de rotación [107,134,136,140,142,149,150,166], los movimientos perpendiculares al plano [113,116,134,136,140,142,143,144,147,159,166,167] y los movimientos radiales Galactocéntricos [121,134,136,137,140,142,143,144,166]. También estudio de movimientos radiales en otras galaxies [138]. Desmontando los argumentos sobre el descubrimiento de la precesión del alabeo [154].

Curvas de rotación: investigación teórica sobre la relación entre la densidad del disco y las velocidades [145]. Ajuste de modelos a la curva de rotación de la Vía Láctea con materia oscura o gravedad modificada (MOND) [149,169]. Cálculo semianalítico exacto de las curvas de rotación con MOND no relativista de Bekenstein-Milgrom [153].

Solución a un viejo problema: el teorema del virial en cúmulos de galaxias con MOND [164,168]. Investigación sobre la hipótesis de un origen extragaláctico de las nubes de alta velocidad, como parte del medio intergaláctico en el grupo de galaxias Local [21,42] y con grandes proporciones de materia oscura. Desarrollo de una nueva hipótesis que explica la generación de alabeos en las galaxias espirales debido a que los flujos intergalácticos son atraídos gravitatoriamente y atrapados directamente por los discos de éstas [33,42,70]. Análisis de las correlaciones entre los parámetros intrínsecos y las características del alabeo en las galaxias espirales alabeadas [36,42], concluyendo que los hipotéticos halos de materia oscura no tienen nada que ver con la formación de alabeos; en concordancia con la hipótesis planteada [33]. También, un catálogo de alabeos en visible [41] muestra que la mayoría de las galaxias espirales están alabeadas mientras que ninguna galaxia lenticular está alabeada, lo que de nuevo está en concordancia con la hipótesis porque las galaxias lenticulares no tienen gas y la caída y captura de material en el disco sólo se producen si hay gas en el disco. El ensanchamiento del disco como función del ángulo galactocéntrico en la Vía Láctea es otro hecho que está de acuerdo con la hipótesis [70,78].

Estudio del efecto de la barra de las galaxias espirales como potenciador de la acrecimiento de medio intergaláctico en los halos [62]. Estudio dinámico de dos barras aisladas en las que se permite deformación geométrica descrita por elipsoides de Jacobi modificados [110]: las barras se repelen mútuamente y el intercambio de momento angular se gasta en modificar su geometría alargando su eje mayor. Análisis de la correlación entre el número de galaxias satélite de marea y el tamaño del bulbo [119]: se ha encontrado a nivel de 5-sigma, lo que indica que la formación de bulbos tiene que ver con la interacción de galaxias, tal y como predicen los modelos de gravedad modificada (MOND). Críica al descubrimiento de una posible de una galaxia sin materia oscura [132].

Otras investigaciones. Observación de contrapartidas ópticas de GRBs (estallidos de rayos Gamma)[37,40]. Búsqueda de estrellas que estaban en catálogos antiguos y no se observan en la actualidad[141]. Participación en el cartografiado fotométrico en infrarrojo cercano VISTA [84,88,94,96,108], y el cartografiado fotométrico y espectroscópico en visible SDSS-III [117,157].
